THE WD SAILS TEAM

The WD Sails team operates always keeping in mind the company’s purpose, which is to create quality products customized to the needs of each customer.

External consultants and freelancers work alongside the internal team. The specific characteristics of each sail we build are crucial when selecting the most suitable and experienced designers and professionals for the project, sometimes leveraging our pool of consultants. WD Sails Team is engaged in their work by passion and the desire to provide customers with tailor-made service.

Over time, a relationship based on trust and mutual respect usually grows between our team and customers.
Our team members are always available to advise your boat’s performance improvements or to chat about sailing.

Accordingly, for defining the technical and design specifications of a new sail or for a sail upgrade, the WD Sails Team always starts a conversation with customers to understand their needs and expectations before assessing what is required to achieve the best solution.

OUR STORY

2000

In Gorizia, two friends, Andrea and Aaron, started a production of carbon masts for windsurfing and a sail maintenance and repair service. The past of the Gorizia loft strongly influenced the evolution of the current company, leading to an innovative mentality and quality-oriented production.

2006

A strategic split-up of the company was completed and resulted in two entities: the already existing WaveDogs company focused on windsurfing and a brand new company, WaveDogSails, which became a dedicated sail workshop.

2008

The first turning point for WaveDogSails came thanks to Cavalazzi when it became the sail service provider for Caracci’s sailboat at Minitransat. This crucial opportunity turned WaveDogSails from an artisanal sailing workshop into a professional sailmaker loft. WaveDogSails collaborated and supported many successful athletes between 2008 and 2013, who collected many victories in Italian and international mini regattas.

2013

The sailmaker loft located in Gorizia closed down, and the owner, Aaron, moved his business to Slovenia, where he took over the direction of the production at VK Sport. This company was for delivering services and manufacturing for third parties.

2013-2018

VK Sport worked with Ullman Sail Italia. It provided a consultancy service to companies such as 9-sails. On the production side, it cut and delivered sail panels ready to be joined to many European companies in the boating industry, such as DuelSailSystem and EastWings.

2018

The WIND DESIGN SAILS project originated from a group of professionals in the sailing industry to combine the quality of products and the experience of iconic hardware brands from a first-class supplier, such as Sailg Point, with an already well-established activity of sail production and design.

since 2019

The experience gained in about 20 years is the foundation of the new Wind Design Sails project. Its mission is to satisfy every sailor consumer's needs, from the novice ones in cruising through the expert ones in racing, up to those competing in international regattas. Our mission is to provide our customers with the most appropriate solutions devised with our partners (designers, athletes, and consultants), qualified in sail design.

2020-2021

The team at VK Sport conducts and accomplishes an R&D project for the production of wings and the optimization of the new production chain.

2023

Wind Design Sails, already a sponsor of the CNSM offshore regattas for four years, carries out a check-up service on board the boats before the regattas, supported by Gottifredi Maffioli and Sailing Point. As this pilot project got very positive feedback from sailors, a check-up service on board will join in the sail loft service offering.

GS40 PAPERINI “OSIRA”

We got in touch with WD Sails loft after reviewing several quotes for the build of a cruise set, Mainsail + Genoa, collected from the sailmakers in the Trieste area. We have had a very positive experience from the beginning. They promptly responded to the request for a quote by inviting us to the sail loft, where they showed us a wide range of available materials that could eventually suit our requests and needs. They also told us about sail construction techniques and all the variable factors to recommend the most suitable material for our needs. X-YACHTS X-402, KIMA (ITA 11837)

In January 2020, we had the new mainsail for our Kima, an X-402 from 1990 built by Wind Design Sails. The sail cut is a classic cross-cut that, for a slightly dated high-profile boat like ours, is just perfect. We opted for a hybrid solution with the three high full-batten battens and the three low half-batten battens, which is a solution that enables a wide range of adjustments. The sail is a combination of the best solutions found on the most performing sails (for example, there is no eyelet passing through the earins or gaskets but only rings in textile or one-piece stainless steel externally sewn). The sail is beautiful and fits perfectly on our rig: it’s smashing! Aaron is very professional, and it was a pleasure to deal with this young and dynamic sail loft. Thanks, Aaron!
